The greater part of the Library’s rare book collection, including the incunabula, came from the donation of Count József Teleki (1826), the first president of the Academy, and the bequests of György Ráth (1905) and Count Ferenc Vigyázó (1928). Given the selection of books that were on the market at the time, it is hardly surprising that most of the former owners of the rare books in the Academy Library were German, Austrian and North Italian individuals, institutions, and monasteries. The collection is also rich with Hungarica. Árpád Hellebrant’s catalogue (1886) of the incunabula–books printed in the 15th century–contains 466 entries (493 copies), with his notes in Latin. At the moment the Library has the second largest collection of incunabula in Hungary, approximately 1 200 copies with duplicates included. They have been catalogued in the Library’s OPAC (konyvtar.mta.hu), with notes in Hungarian.

This version of the Catalogue is in English and is intended for use among experts in the international community. It contains 1 020 bibliographic entries–books and broadsides–and some 30 other entries, works that were printed after 1 500 but were regarded earlier as incunabula. The descriptions are complemented by the nearly 3 000 images linked to the data records in the electronic catalogue. A modern catalogue must include a description of the individual copies. Details regarding provenance, owners’ notes, stamps, bookplates, embellishments, hand-painted initials, rubrication, binding, condition and the completeness of the copy have been provided; prints in composite (‘bound with’) volumes are listed; print vari-ants are noted; manuscript or printed frag-ments found in the book are characterized. Indexes of commentators, translators, printers and places of printing, former owners, bookbinders and workshops, and concordances with bibliographies have been added.
